米Microsoftは米国時間2008年2月20日，中小企業向けサーバー・スイート製品系列「Windows Essential Server Solutions」の製品構成と提供時期を発表した。2008年下半期に中企業向けの「Windows Essential Business Server（EBS）2008」（開発コード名「Centro」）と小企業向けの「Windows Small Business Server（SBS）2008」（開発コード名「Cougar」）をリリースする予定。
Windows EBS 2008は，クライアント・パソコン最大250台の環境を対象とする。2月末リリース予定のサーバーOS「Windows Server 2008」をベースに，各種サーバー・ソフトウエアおよびサービスをパッケージ化している。運用に必要なサーバーの物理的な台数は，「Standard Edition」が3台，「Premium Edition」が4台（関連記事：中規模企業向けサーバー・スイート新製品「Windows Essential Business Server」に期待する）。
Standard Editionで使うサーバーは，1台目が管理サーバーでWindows Server 2008と「System Center Essentials 2007」，2台目がメッセージング・サーバーでWindows Server 2008と「Exchange Server 2007」「Forefront Security for Exchange Server」，3台目がセキュリティ・サーバーでWindows Server 2008，Exchange Server 2007と「Internet Security and Acceleration Server（ISAS）」の次期版を動かす。Premium Editionでは，これらにWindows Server 2008と「SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition」を動かすデータベース・サーバーが加わる。
Windows SBS 2008は小企業向けのサーバー・スイート製品で，クライアント・パソコン50台までの環境に適している。サーバー1台で運用可能な「Standard Edition」と，2台必要な「Premium Edition」を用意する。前者はWindows Server 2008，Exchange Server 2007，Forefront Security for Exchange Server，「Windows SharePoint Services 3.0」「Live OneCare for Server」を一括提供し，小企業向けオンライン・アプリケーション・サービス「Microsoft Office Live Small Business」との連携が可能。後者は，2台目の物理サーバーでWindows Server 2008とSQL Server 2008 Standard Editionを動かす。
米Dell，富士通と独Siemensの合弁子会社Fujitsu Siemens Computers，米Hewlett-Packard（HP），米IBM，米IntelがWindows EBS 2008／SBS 2008対応製品を計画しているほか，さまざまなパートナー企業がWindows EBS 2008ベースのアプライアンス製品やWindows EBS 2008用アドイン・ソフトウエアを提供するという。
Microsoftは，2月27日にカリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスで開催するWindows Server 2008発売イベントで，Windows EBS 2008／SBS 2008のデモンストレーションを実施する。
